The Lloyd's Register Educational Trust (LRET)
The LRET is an independent charity which exists to support advances in transportation, science, engineering and technology education, training and research worldwide, for the benefit of all. Much of the work it funds enhances the safety of life, property and the environment at sea, on land and in the air. Established in 2004 by the Lloyd's Register Group, The LRET is wholly funded by the Lloyd's Register Group but remains independent. Only The LRET Board of Trustees can decide how funds are used.
The LRET focuses on four categories that form a continuum of support for people from a very young age:
pre-university education - through appropriate organisations, promoting careers in science, engineering and technology
university education - funding undergraduate and post-graduate scholarships and awards at selected universities and colleges
vocational training and professional development - supporting professional institutions, educational and training establishments, working with people of all ages
research - funding existing or new centres of excellence at universities and academic institutes.
In the past six years, The LRET has distributed more than £15 million in grants and has committed another £15 million of funding for future projects, some of which will continue until 2015. Currently the majority of The LRET’s funds are invested in science research programmes.
