Integrated - PAS 99
In recent years, there has been a proliferation of standards. This in turn can lead to duplication of requirements causing unnecessary cost and time. With more businesses approved to more management system standards and schemes, it makes sense to integrate where practical. And this is where PAS 99 could help.
How can PAS 99 benefit my organisation?
We know from experience that organisations choose varying approaches to managing aspects of quality, environmental, health and safety and security management systems from stand-alone to fully integrated systems.
PAS 99 introduces a generic framework by which the ‘common’ requirements of standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, etc can be addressed in an integrated manner. It requires organisations to apply the highest level of control from any individual standard across the whole system in a more holistic approach. Internal benefits from integration can include more efficient operations, reduction in duplication of effort and improvement in the management of business risks. However, the real test of effectiveness of an integrated approach is to identify the potential efficiency gains and opportunities for taking waste out of the system through integration.
The standard uses ISO Guide 72. This recognises that all current ISO management system standards contain ‘common’ elements which can be used as the basis for integration, although each standard will also have its own specific requirements:
- Policy
- Planning
- Implementation and operation
- Performance assessment
- Improvement
- Management review
