TNT - ISO 14001 Environment Case Study

LRQA recently certified TNT's environmental management system to the ISO 14001 standard.

The case study follows TNT's journey through the certification process with LRQA and also looks at the key environmental issues facing the transport industry at the moment and what TNT are doing to tackle them.

TNT as a global operator in the express logistics and mail service, recognise that almost one fifth of CO2 emissions produced globally are as a result of transport activities, therefore they take a view that they are part of the problem.

In 2006 TNT launched a very unique environmental programme called Planet Me which focuses on reducing their carbon footprint. Attaining ISO 14001 on a global scale helps them further reach their environmental goals and promises.

"What the assessment process made us do was to look at our environmental impacts. And you think as a transport organisation, probably the most significant aspect of our operation is that we run a fleet of over 3,200 vehicles, which uses a large amount of diesel fuel every year, so beyond that we do produce some waste. Beyond that, we use energy, so gas, electric, heating oil. So, our focus was very much looking at those environmental impacts, and deciding what we could do to reduce them."
