Background
The introduction of international management systems standards has led to an increase in demand for certification services worldwide. Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance Limited (LRQA) was established in 1985 following a government quality campaign to enhance the flagging reputation of British businesses. LRQA was the first certification body in the UK to gain accreditation for quality management systems certification from the National Accreditation Council for Certification Bodies, now known as the United Kingdom Accreditation Council (UKAS).
