Farmers Boy, a wholly owned subsidiary of Morrisons Supermarkets PLC became an early adopter of this food safety standard. The assessment, carried out by a team of specialist food sector assessors at LRQA, took place at Farmers Boy's multi-functional site at Bradford where they produce a wide variety of products including cooked meats, sausage, baked and unbaked savoury pastry products, burgers, mince, sliced bacon and gammons along with pre-packed block and grated cheese.
"The key objective was to make sure that high standards of food safety were delivered throughout our normal operational cycle. Operating under the requirements of the Food Safety standard ensured that the strict systems guaranteed the safety of Morrisons' food and delivered other benefits. The robust Food Safety Management System implemented has shown many benefits site wide" says Jonathan Horsman, Site Technical Manager.
"Communications and instructions across the site are much improved due to the implementation of enhanced communication strategies i.e. the management review process which covers amongst other areas, compliance and legislative changes."
Stephen Clayborough, Operations Director at Farmers Boy added: "Credit is due to everyone at Farmers Boy who got behind the standard and understood that paying attention to food safety requirements ensures the best products are being offered and provided to our customers."
"June 2008 saw Farmers Boy achieve their certification to A Grade for the BRC (British Retail Consortium) Food Standard. The impressive combination of achieving certification to ISO 22000 and BRC grade A shows that Morrisons are performing over and above the standard industry requirements. This is a fantastic achievement regarding food safety and quality throughout the business.
"The success could not have been achieved without the co-operation, enthusiasm, dedication and commitment of the whole management team and colleagues across the business. Everybody's contribution was invaluable," he concluded.
