ISO 22000, the International Standard for food management systems, is being revised to ensure it meets new food safety requirements throughout the supply chain. The international working group (ISO/TC 34/SC 17/WG 8) responsible for the revision held its fourth meeting last month in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The working group received over 1000 comments on the first committee draft (CD) standard and they have clarified a number of key concepts; including applying the new High Level Structure, Annex SL; expanding the concept of risk at operational and business levels; clarification on the Plan Do Check Act cycle; and descriptions of Critical Control Points (CCPs), Operational Prerequisite Programmes (OPRPs), and Prerequisite Programmes (PRPs).
A second CD is being developed and will be shared with the committee. The working group will meet again in June 2016 to review the next round of comments. LRQA’s Vice President Food & Beverage, Vincent Doumeizel commented; “It is important that the working group take the time to get the revision right, so that it meets the current and future needs of the food sector. It will be really useful to get further clarification on key concepts to make food safety management systems more consistent and robust.”
