Norfolk County Services Ltd steps up to OHSAS 18001

Facilities management and contract services organisation, Norfolk County Services is the latest high-profile name to sign up to PRISM, the new staged service from LRQA, the independent management systems provider.

This will see the organisation which employs over 4,500 people achieving certification to BS OHSAS 18001, the health and safety management system standard within an expected timeframe of two years.

PRISM was launched earlier this year by LRQA to enable organisations to gain recognition to OHSAS 18001, the health and safety specification and/or ISO 14001, the environmental management system standard.

A key advantage for Norfolk County Services of using LRQA’s PRISM service will be the ability to progressively build and combine the additional certificated management system with its existing ISO 9001 approved system.

Graham Findlay, Health and Safety Manager explains. “As a large organisation with a diverse range of activities, we want to achieve a uniform system for managing health and safety throughout the organisation. The quality management system has been embedded within the organisation for a number of years. We have a large management team spread across East Anglia who are fully committed to ISO 9001. and it’s our aim to gain the same level of commitment and recognition for the OHSAS health and safety management system.”

“The benefit of this particular scheme is that we will be able to build an OHS system in a series of steps, each formally recognised by LRQA. Our senior management were particularly impressed with the selling point that the visits will be tied in with our ISO 9001 regular visits so causing minimum disruption.

“By signing up to PRISM, we have needed to produce an action plan and map out the steps that we need to achieve within the two-year period that we have ourselves set. It was about getting a programme in place that is manageable with the resource that we have on the ground.”
