BRC Global Standard for Food Safety

The BRC Global Standard for Food Safety – first published in 1998 and now in its 7th issue. The standard is for food manufacturers and contains requirements for a HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) system in accordance with the requirements of Codex Alimentarius, a documented quality management system and control of the factory environment standards, products, process and personnel.

The BRC Global Standard for Food Safety is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).

Additional Modules for BRC Global Standard for Food Safety

In addition to the core BRC Global Standards, LR can help you with a range of Additional Modules that can be added to the standard audit process.

Culture Module - The assessment for this module is carried out along the annual BRC Global Standards Food Safety audit, and it involves a questionnaire completed by employees, as well as a second one completed by the external auditor following the audit.

The answers are measured across four categories and provide a way to evaluate food safety culture, identify areas for development, and measure the success of changes over time.

Traded Goods Module - This module is applicable to packaging products and materials that are purchased and stored at the site prior to sale, and they are not manufactured, further processed or repacked at the site being audited. This Additional Module enables traded goods to be incorporated into the BRC Global Standards audit.

FSMA Module - To support alignment with the US Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), the FSMA Voluntary Module can be added to a BRC Global Standard for Food Safety audit. The module bridges the gap in requirements between FSMA and the BRC Standard. This module is essential for sites doing or planning to do business with customers based in the US. Association of European Coeliac Societies (AOECS) - This module is applicable to manufacturers producing gluten-free food products according to the AOECS standard. Although the module can be used globally, it has been developed based on the European legislation and requirements of the AOECS.

The advantages of the Additional Modules include reduced audit costs as you can include requirements that otherwise would need a separate audit, and meeting geographic or customer needs by covering additional requirements to complement Issue 5.

What is BRC Global Standard for Food Safety certification?

Food manufacturers who supply retailers endorsing the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety now have an obligation to bring their systems in line with this standard.

A key aim of this standard when first developed in 1998 was to provide a single common standard to avoid the confusion and duplication of data which previously existed with the various individual retailer schemes. Additional benefits are that it:

  • Enables suppliers to report on their status to customers recognising the standard
  • Covers all areas of product safety and legality
  • Addresses part of the due diligence requirements of both the supplier and the retailer
  • Requires ongoing surveillance and confirmation of follow up of corrective actions on non-conformity
  • Can be combined with your ISO 9001 and/or HACCP visit.

The certification visit includes inspection of your HACCP and management systems, in addition to a Factory Environmental Inspection. The visit includes preparation of the Audit Report which will be sent to you following approval. In agreement with you, we will also forward to your customers to demonstrate your ability to meet the requirements of the Standard. LR can undertake unannounced visits in addition to planned, however organisations supplying ASDA for their own label products should be aware that unannounced visits are not a requirement.

The BRC Global Standard for Food Safety requires the certification process to be undertaken by third party organisations that are both independent and competent. LR holds accreditation to ISO 17065:2012 from UKAS for all four BRC Standards.
