Over half of all foods sold in the UK are retailer own branded products. Under the Food Safety Act 1990, these retailers must be able to demonstrate ‘due diligence’ and ensure food products are produced safely for the consumer.
BRC Global Standard for Storage and Distribution has been designed to ensure best practice in the handling, storage and/or distribution of food, consumer goods and packaging materials.
Manufacturers and suppliers of packaging used for retailer own branded products have an obligation to implement appropriate systems and controls to ensure the suitability of their packaging for safe food and non-food use.
The BRC Consumer Products Standard has been developed by the British Retail Consortium, the lead trade association representing retailers.
Issued in January 2014, it enables those organisations that buy and sell products or provide a service in the food supply chain to demonstrate best practice on product safety, quality and operational conditions.
