BS EN 16001

Implementing a BS EN 16001 certified energy management system can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and so help in reducing your organisational carbon footprint while importantly reducing costs. The standard details requirements to enable you to develop and run a system, identifying high energy usage areas and targeting reductions in those areas for increased energy efficiency.

With saving energy becoming a key focus for today’s organisations, using BS EN 16001 offers you the latest best practice in energy efficiency and makes sound business sense. Applicable to all types of organisations regardless of size or sector, complying with this standard will help you introduce continual improvement within energy management.

Certification to BS EN 16001 can also help those organisations that are participating in the Environment Agency’s CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme. Unique to LRQA, our Carbon & Energy Management Scheme (CEMS) uses BS EN 16001 as its basis.

How can BS EN 16001 benefit my organisation?

  • cost savings through improved energy efficiency
  • helps reduce organisational carbon footprint
  • Improved compliance with relevant regulatory and legal requirements
  • policies formalised
  • can integrate with existing management systems, eg ISO 14001
  • energy security risks reduced
  • may provide a competitive edge when dealing with potential client

BS EN 16001 has fed into the development of the international management system standard for energy, ISO 50001. Launched in June by ISO, a key priority in its development was to ensure compatibility with BS EN 16001 making the transition straightforward.

We are ideally placed to provide a pragmatic assessment to BS EN 16001 and to the ISO 50001 standards. Developing our BS EN 16001 service capability was a natural addition to our portfolio of environmental services. We were the first certification body to achieve a full scope of accreditation to ISO 14001 from the United Kingdom Accreditation Service and are also accredited to provide greenhouse gas emissions verification across 18 European countries and rapidly extending this worldwide.
