BRC Global Standard for Storage and Distribution

This standard, originally published in 2006 has been designed to ensure best practice in the handling, storage and/or distribution of food, consumer goods and packaging materials. It provides a framework for best practice for any organisation involved in the storage and/or distribution of goods and in line with all the BRC Standards requires organisations to demonstrate continual improvement of their systems. The standard is applicable to all forms of transportation.

A revised version of this Standard was published in 2010 and all audits are now carried out under Issue 2. Key changes from the first version of the Standard include a new section on management commitment reflecting the importance that top management play in achieving certification and the introduction of a risk based approach to compliance with relevance to handling consumer products and packaging.

How can certification benefit my organisation?

The publication of the Storage and Distribution Standard now allows each of the organisations involved in the supply chain from point of production to retail to benefit from independent audit.

The Standard is risk based with a strong emphasis on Hazard and Risk Analysis to identify and manage potential product safety risks and there is a requirement for a documented quality management system. This is supplemented with particular best practice requirements for managing the operation, the conditions of any storage site and site personnel.

There are separate modules for the different sectors within the supply chain including Storage, Distribution, Wholesaling and Contracted specialist services. Organisations can be certified against some or all of the modules depending on their business. However, the Wholesaling and Contracted Services modules always need to be applied in association with Storage modules.
