Carbon Management

We focus on helping clients assure that their sustainability strategies and climate change assertions are trustworthy. This means you receive a fair reward for your sustainability improvements from the financial markets, regulators and customers.

LRQA can assure that your greenhouse gas emissions claims at an oranisational, plant, project, or even product level are verifiable, accurate and reliable. Most importantly, we deliver independent, impartial and trustworthy opinions which are vital to the long term credibility and success of greenhouse gas emissions reduction programmes.

ISO 14064

A three-part standard, ISO 14064:2006 comprises a set of GHG accounting and verification criteria. Part 1 is aimed at providing credibility and assurance to organisational GHG emissons reports and can help support your claims.

Part 2 focuses on projects designed to reduce emissions while part 3 provides principles, requirements and guidance for those conducting GHG information validation and verification.

LRQA has a range of services including a 2-day training course 'Quantifying your Organisation's Carbon Footprint.' For an outline, costs and dates please visit our training section. For service information please click on the ISO 14064 tab at the head of this page.

PAS 2050

This Publicly Available Specification was co-sponsored by the Carbon Trust and DEFRA, and has been developed to provide a consistent and reproducible method for assessing the life cycle carbon footprint of products. From the assessment, organisations can identify the emission 'hot spots' in their production processes and supply chain and take action to reduce them.

For information on our services please click on the PAS 2050 tab at the head of this page.

ISO 14064

What is ISO 14064?

In parallel with the emergence of regulated or mandatory schemes relating to monitoring, reporting and verification of Greenhouse Gases (GHG), organisations outside of these schemes are now increasingly wishing to monitor and report their emissions (commonly referred to as the organisation's carbon footprint).

In response to this demand and to provide an international standard against which such reports can be voluntarily verified, ISO 14064 has been developed.

ISO 14064 has been prepared in three parts:

ISO 14064, part 1
This details the principles and requirements for designing, developing, managing and reporting organization level GHG inventories. It includes requirements for determining boundaries, quantifying emissions and removals, and identifying specific company actions or activities aimed at improving GHG management. It also includes requirements and guidance on quality management of the GHG inventory, reporting, internal auditing and the organisation's responsibilities for verification.

ISO 14064, part 2
This focuses on GHG projects or project based activities specifically designed to reduce GHG emissions or increase GHG removals. It includes principles and requirements for determining project baseline scenarios and for monitoring, quantifying and reporting project performance relative to that baseline and provides the basis for GHG projects to be validated and verified.

ISO 14064, part 3
This part of ISO 14064 provides principles, requirements and guidance for those conducting GHG information validation and verification. It describes a process for providing assurance to intended users that an organization's or project's GHG assertions are complete, accurate, consistent, transparent and without material discrepancies.

How can ISO 14064 benefit my organisation?

ISO 14064 can help you:

  • prove your commitment to reducing your carbon emissions
  • develop robust internal mechanisms for quantifying and reporting GHG emissions
  • prepare legitimate GHG assertions, claims and reports
  • quantify and report emission reductions from projects

PAS 2050

What is PAS2050?

PAS 2050 has been developed to provide a consistent and reproducible method for assessing the life cycle carbon footprint of products. It is supported by a complementary, practical impelmentation guide, explaining how carbon footprints of products can be assessed across their entire life cycle.

In addition, a Code of Good Practice (CoGP) has been developed to promote reductions in product carbon footprints and assist those organisatons that intend communicating their product GHG emissiosn and reduction claims to stakeholders. PAS 2050, the implemetnation Guide and the Code of Good Practice are all available free of charge from the Carbon Trust and DEFRA websites.

How can LRQA help you?

Third party, independent, accredited certification from LRQA will provide your organisation with the assurance that they have fully conformed to the requirements of the PAS and that the GHG emissions calculation is valid. This information can then be communicated to stakeholders with confidence.
