Lloyd’s Register Group - celebrating 250 years
The world's first classification society, Lloyd's Register has been providing impartial certification since 1760. While first recognised for its high standards in shipping, today its expertise and activities extend far wider to cover energy, transportation and management systems.
Today, Lloyd's Register is a UK registered community benefit society whose constitution reaffirms the long-held principle that any surpluses must be reinvested in support of the organisation's objectives. Income derived from fees and the sale of publications is used for research and development, supporting public education, training employees and improving services.
To celebrate 250 years, LR Group employees are taking part in a special LR250 commemorative campaign. Teams were encouraged to submit ideas for projects that would directly benefit their local communities. 45 projects have been given funding and employees are able to contribute several hours a week over the nine-month campaign. For more information on how LR employees are helping their communities, please visit www.lr250.org
Here in the UK, one of the LR teams has been tasked with raising £35,000 before the end of 2010 to help replace one of the RNLI's inshore lifeboats. The RNLI Ross Brawn Challenge will see LRQA's Ron Bishop together with colleagues from LR Energy walk along the 180 mile stretch of the Thames Path starting from its source in Kemble to the Chiswick Lifeboat Station in London. As part of the Challenge, the LR Team will be organising a number of events to help towards its fundraising goal. To donate, you can sponsor Ron directly.
